Jerry Flannery Match Report:

Munster V Sale Sharks (24-16) 19th October 2008
A ferocious game, all the intensity of a cup final!

You must be delighted, what’s the feeling in the camp today?

We knew we had to win and that this was a big game for us, after this we have Clermont back to back, and Sale already had the bonus point. If Munster had lost we would have been pretty much out of the competition. It was like a cup final for us, which is strange so early in the championship. Good to get a win on the road, hard to do in the Heineken cup.

The game seems very intense from the start, was it a very physical game?

Edgeley Park is a small pitch, it’s a soccer stadium so you’re bound to be running into fellas all the time. Some massive tackles were going in, (Mafi on Chebal) it was like a game of American football at times.

Does it take you much longer to recover after a game as physical as that?

The more intense games like this take about two days to recover from. You are sorer two days after the game than you are the day after the game. We had a pool session this morning, then did some recovery weights, and 20 mins cardio, followed by a rub to take away some of the pain!

How did the arm hold up?

Arm held up alright, the rest of me doesn’t look too good!

Were you happy with your own performance?

I felt grand about my own performance, we need to tighten up on the set pieces, but this was just such a massive game, we are delighted with the win.

Did the arrival of Charlie Hodgsen make a difference, and were you aware of it at the time?

Sale were chasing the game at the stage when he came on, they were starting to throw the ball around a lot more. They had to come at us, they were not going to go into their shell at that point in the game.

Do you feel the hooker’s role has changed as a result of ERV’s?

The bread and butter of the hooker's job is still the same, the scrum and lineout are still the most important part of the role, but the game is becoming more expansive and all players are trying to get on the ball a lot more.
