Gerry McNamara - Powerlifting World Champion
Gerry McNamara - Powerlifting World Champion

I met the MD of USN in Galway in 2000 at the Irish junior championships and although world champion, I introduced myself and asked USN to sponsor me.

My weight then was 60kg and best lifts were 250kg squat, 140kg bench and 225kg dead lift - that was my best.

When USN started sponsoring me in April 2000, my lifts went skyward and at the worlds I achieved 265kg squat, 155kg bench and dead lift of 240kg and won the worlds.

In 2001 I went to the European Powerlifting Championships and achieved 270kg squat, 162.5kg bench and 242.5 dead lift at 60kg and came first.
At Worlds again I got 272.5kg squat, 162.5kg bench and 250kg deadlift and came first again.

In 2002 at the European Powerlifting Championship, I got 270kg squat, 155kg bench and 250kg deadlift. I had a slight injury, but still came first.

2003 World Powerlifting Championships: squat 285kg, bench 170kg and deadlift 270kg and did the biggest total in powerlifting history with 720kg world record total in 60kg class

In 2004 I had to move to the 67.5kg class as I got too muscular from all the protein and supplements supplied to me by USN! I trained for a year without competing to consolidate my move to 67kg

2005 European Championships: squat 310kg, bench 180kg and dead lift 260kg - first place
World Powerlifting Championships: 325kg world record squat, 192.5 world record bench and 275kg deadlift, giving me another world record total

2006 European Championships: squat 330kg, bench 195kg and dead lift 267.5kg - another world record total
World Championships: 350kg world record squat, 202.5kg world record bench and a deadlift of 285kg with another world record total of 837.5kg at a bodyweight of 67.5 kg

How did you get involved in powerlifting? I read about Samson from the Bible and became interested in strength from that day. I started serious training when I was 16 and became world junior champion at 19
